The best folding electric bike for most people in 2026 is the Lectric XP4 750. It is big, strong and cheap for what it does. But it weighs 71 lb, so the right pick depends on how far you carry the bike and how small it needs to fold.

This list covers eight bikes, from a $799 Lectric to a $3,549 Tern. Every one has a UL 2849 listing from the maker, except the Tern, which lists a European standard instead. We dropped the older white-label bikes that used to sit here. Most are no longer for sale.

The 30-second answer

  • Best overall: Lectric XP4 750. Big battery, 330 lb payload, $1,299.

  • Most compact when folded: Brompton Electric C Line. Folds to about 25 x 23 x 11 in.

  • Best for heavier riders: Velotric Fold 1 Plus. Rated for a 450 lb payload.

What to check first

Look for a UL 2849 listing (the whole electrical system) and UL 2271 (the battery), and read the warranty terms before you buy. I skip white-label brands that fail those checks. Our e-bike red flag list explains why, and our picks by rider type shows what we favor instead.

The 8 picks

Lectric XP4 750: best overall

Lectric XP4 750
Image: Lectric

Lectric lists the XP4 750 at $1,299. It has a 750W motor (1,310W peak), an 840Wh battery and a 330 lb payload. Lectric claims up to 85 miles per charge and a 28 mph top speed, according to the specs summarized by Electric Bike Review. It can run as a Class 1, 2 or 3 bike. OutdoorGearLab has also reviewed the 750 version.

Who it suits: riders who want one bike for commuting, errands and weekend trips, with a rear rack rated for 150 lb. Who should skip it: anyone who carries the bike up stairs. At 71 lb, it is a car-trunk folder, not a train-stairs folder. Lectric lists UL 2849 for the bike and UL 2271 for the battery.

Lectric XP Lite 2.0: best lightweight

Lectric XP Lite 2.0
Image: Lectric

The XP Lite 2.0 weighs 49 lb with its battery. Pull the 7 lb battery and the frame is 41 lb. Lectric sells it from $799 with the 375Wh battery (up to 45 miles claimed) and up to $1,099 with the 672Wh pack (up to 80 miles claimed). The motor is 300W nominal, top speed is 20 mph and payload is 275 lb. Lectric lists it as UL 2849 certified. Details come from Electric Bike Review.

It suits apartment dwellers, first-time buyers and lighter riders. It is slower and less powerful than the XP4, so steep hills will test it. If you want a lighter bike with a chainless shaft drive, our Honbike HF01 review covers one (about 46 lb, 216Wh). We did not find a UL listing for it, so it is not a pick.

Brompton Electric C Line: most compact when folded

Brompton lists the Electric C Line from 39.5 lb with the battery on (31.4 lb without). Brompton’s US store gives a folded size of 25.3 x 23 x 10.6 in, and lists the 4-speed at $3,280 on its product page. Claimed range is up to 56 miles. The frame carries a 7-year warranty and the electric system 3 years, with registration.

It fits under a desk, in a closet or on a crowded train. Brompton says the bike is independently certified to UL 2849. The tradeoff is price and the small 16 in wheels. It is a commuter’s bike, not a trail bike. See Brompton’s Electric C Line page for current options.

Heybike Mars 2.0: best under $1,000

Heybike Mars 2.0
Image: Heybike

Heybike’s own page showed a sale price of $899 against a $1,499 regular price when we checked in October 2026. Sales come and go, so confirm before you buy. The Mars 2.0 has 20 x 4 in fat tires, an 1,800W peak motor and a 330 lb payload. The Amazon listing for the long-range version names a 624Wh battery, UL 2849 certification and a 70+ mile claim. Best Buy sells a version rated for 45 miles, so check which battery you are getting.

At 75 lb it is the heaviest bike here. It suits riders who want a stable, soft-riding folder and will mostly lift it into a car or garage. It is also our top pick in the under $1,000 folding e-bike price range.

Aventon Sinch 2.5: best folding fat tire

Aventon Sinch 2.5

Aventon claims 68 lb for the Sinch 2.5. A published review measured about 72.5 lb. It has a 500W hub motor (750W peak), a 636Wh battery and Tektro hydraulic disc brakes. Payload is 300 lb, and the step-through frame fits riders from 4 ft 11 in to 6 ft 2 in. Folded, it measures about 41 x 24 x 29 in. Retailers list the 2026 model near $1,799, and Aventon lists UL 2849.

It suits riders who want fat tires and a low step-through. Skip it if you need something light. For more options, see our best folding fat tire e-bikes list. Aventon’s product page has current pricing.

Velotric Fold 1: best for RV and camping

RV travel guides, including this Speedway Media piece, keep coming back to the Velotric Fold line. The reason is simple. It has a compact fold and enough battery for campground loops. Velotric lists the Fold 1 at 63 lb with a 608Wh battery, 750W motor, 28 mph top speed and a 55 mile claim. The folded size is about 38 x 19 x 33 in. It is $1,299 on sale, from $1,499. Velotric lists UL 2271 and UL 2849.

Reviewers have measured it a few pounds heavier than the claim (about 67 lb). Plan on that if you lift it onto a bumper rack. Details are on Velotric’s Fold 1 page.

Tern Vektron S10: best premium

Tern Vektron S10
Image: Tern

Tern lists the Vektron S10 at $3,549 and 48.7 lb. It has a Bosch Performance drive unit (65 Nm) and a 400Wh battery, with 300 and 500Wh options. Claimed range is 34 to 68 miles on the 400Wh pack. Max rider weight is 231.5 lb, and the integrated rack carries 60 lb. Folded, it is about 15.7 x 33.7 x 26.6 in, and Tern says it folds in about 10 seconds.

It is the pick for daily commuters and cargo haulers who want a dealer network and Bosch service. Tern’s page lists EN 15194 compliance, not UL. Ask your dealer about US listings before you buy. See Tern’s Vektron S10 page for specs.

Velotric Fold 1 Plus: best for heavier riders

Velotric rates the Fold 1 Plus for a 450 lb payload, the highest on this list. It lists a 608Wh battery, a 68 mile claim and a 28 mph top speed. Weight is 63 lb, folded size is 37.8 x 19.7 x 33.5 in, and it costs $1,499. The battery is rated IPX7 and the frame IPX6, and Velotric lists UL 2271 and UL 2849.

If you are over 250 lb or haul gear, this is the safest spec sheet here. Check the Fold 1 Plus page for current pricing.

How much does a folding e-bike weigh?

Between 39 and 75 lb in this list. The lightest are Brompton and Lectric’s XP Lite. Most fat tire folders sit near 70 lb.

Be honest about your stairs. A bike over about 45 lb is a car-trunk bike, not a walk-up bike (that is our editorial rule of thumb, not a standard). Removing the battery helps. The XP Lite drops to 41 lb and the Brompton to 31.4 lb without it.

Folded size and transit rules

Folded size matters more than frame weight on a train, in a trunk or under a desk. The Brompton is the clear winner at about 25 x 23 x 11 in. Most others fold to roughly 37 x 20 x 30 in.

Transit rules differ by agency. Many limit bikes at peak hours, and some restrict e-bike batteries. Check your agency’s policy. Also check which class your bike is. Class 1 is pedal assist to 20 mph, Class 2 adds a throttle to 20 mph, and Class 3 is pedal assist to 28 mph. Our e-bike classes guide covers where each is allowed.

Pedal assist and hand throttle also feel different. Our pedal assist and hand throttle guide explains how to ride each smoothly. Brake feel matters on small wheels, too. Our explainer on e-bike brake types covers disc, regenerative and more.

Range: Wh vs claimed miles

Compare battery watt-hours (Wh), not claimed miles. Makers quote the best case: low assist, a light rider, flat ground. Tern’s own range for one battery runs from 34 to 68 miles, depending on assist level.

More Wh gives more room, all else equal. A 840Wh pack and a 216Wh pack are different tools. Our guide to how battery chemistry and capacity affect real range goes deeper.

Cheap bikes tend to offer three-speed modes and LED display screens with little data. Our guide to e-bike displays shows what each readout means.

Are foldable e-bikes worth it?

Yes, if storage or transit is your real problem. A folder fits in a small apartment, a car trunk or an RV bay. A full-size bike usually rides better, though.

Small wheels feel twitchier on rough roads, and hinges need checking from time to time. Folders also cost more per pound of bike. If you have space and never carry the bike, a regular e-bike is better value.

Before you shop, read our red flag list. Skip no-name Amazon folders with no UL listing and no parts support. A folding lock is a smart add-on.
