Plenty of trunk racks are rated for about 35 pounds per bike. Plenty of e-bikes weigh twice that. If your car has no hitch, that gap is the whole problem.
So can you carry an e-bike without one? Yes, with a roof rack or a trunk rack, but only for the right bike. A light e-bike and a roof tray can work. A heavy one belongs on a platform carrier, and I cover those in our guide to hitch racks built for heavy bikes.
Weigh the bike before you shop
Every rack decision comes back to one number. Many commuter e-bikes run 50 to 70 pounds. Fat-tire and cargo models can top 80.
Get yours on a bathroom scale. Stand on it holding the bike, then subtract your own weight. Do it with the battery in and again with it out.
That second number matters. A battery is several pounds, and pulling it makes the bike easier to lift and easier on a rack. It also keeps the battery out of rain and road vibration. If you haven’t sorted that routine yet, here’s how to take the battery off for transport. take the battery off
Roof racks: fine if you can lift the bike
A roof carrier is the most realistic no-hitch option for an e-bike. The rack holds the bike by its wheels or frame on a tray that bolts to crossbars. Nothing leans on your paint.
Three things decide whether it works for you.
- Two weight limits. The carrier has a rating, and so does your roof. Your owner’s manual lists the roof figure. The lower number wins, and the crossbars and tray count toward it along with the bike.
- The lift. Getting 55 pounds over your head onto an SUV roof is a different job from raising a road bike. A hatchback or sedan is easier. A step stool and a second person help.
- Tire width. Standard trays are built for normal tires. Fat tires often need a wider tray, so check the spec before you order.
One more catch people miss: height. A bike on the roof adds a few feet. Garages, drive-throughs and low parking structures become hazards, and you can’t see the problem from the driver’s seat. Some riders hang a tag from the mirror as a reminder.
If the bike will ride up there for hours, an e-bike cover made for rack travel keeps the display and connectors from taking a beating.
Trunk racks: the weak link for e-bikes
Trunk racks hang from straps hooked over the trunk lid or hatch. They’re cheap, fold flat and fit lots of cars. They’re also the option I’d trust least with an e-bike.
The Saris Guardian, a well-known no-hitch model, is listed at 35 pounds per bike. One two-bike trunk rack listing caps the total load at 70 pounds. Those numbers suit a hybrid or a light commuter. They don’t suit most e-bikes.
The fit is the next problem. E-bike frames often lack a level top tube, and step-through frames have none at all. Some trunk racks include a cross-bar adapter to fix that, which is worth looking for. Keep the straps off the battery, the motor and any cables.
Check the car, too. Spoilers, plastic trunk lids and odd hatch shapes can rule out a trunk rack. Saris tells buyers to check its fit guide for the Solo model before ordering, and that advice applies to any trunk rack.
And look at the back of your car after loading. Most states require your license plate and brake lights to stay visible. A bike hanging off the trunk can hide both. Check your own state’s rule before a long drive.
When the smart move is to add a hitch
If you’ll carry an e-bike regularly, or two of them, a hitch rack is the better tool. Platform racks made for e-bikes list capacities such as 160 pounds for two bikes, and some take tires up to 5 inches wide. The Saris SuperClamp, which fits e-bikes, carries a list price near $580. Prices as of October 2026.
Many cars can take a bolt-on hitch receiver, though not all. Ask a shop whether yours can. bolt-on hitch
There are other ways to skip the rack. A folding e-bike can ride inside with the seats down. A pickup can use a truck bed mount with a ramp. Neither needs a hitch.
Questions riders ask
Is there a bike rack that doesn’t require a hitch? Can I put one on my car without one?
Yes. Roof racks and trunk racks both mount without a hitch. Trunk racks are the easiest to fit and the weakest on weight. Roof racks carry more but ask you to lift the bike.
Do e-bikes need a special bike rack?
Not always, but the weight does matter. Check the per-bike rating on any rack. If your e-bike is over it, pick a different rack. Racks sold for e-bikes also tend to handle wider tires and longer wheelbases.
What is the best bike rack for a car for an e-bike?
For a car with no hitch, I’d pick a roof tray if the bike is under about 55 pounds and you can lift it. A trunk rack only makes sense for a light e-bike and short trips. Past that, I’d add a hitch and buy a platform rack rated for e-bike weight.
My verdict: a roof tray is the only no-hitch option I’d use for a real e-bike, and anything heavier than you can comfortably lift is a reason to get a hitch.
