How many calories does cycling burn?

Have you ever wondered how many calories you burn while riding a bike? And does it matter if you’re biking on the road or off-road? Oh, and what about indoor biking? Well, just like many things, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer.

I went on a 40-kilometer bike ride recently. I used a Polar smartwatch and a Lezyne GPS to track my ride. Interestingly, the Polar watch told me I burned 1,235 calories, but the Lezyne GPS said it was only 933 calories. That’s about the same as the energy in my breakfast before the ride or, if we’re being a bit less healthy, like a cheeseburger from McDonald’s after the ride.

So, how can you figure out the right number of calories you burn while biking? And what makes a difference in how much energy you use up? We talked to Claire Desroches, a sports nutritionist at Bodyline Fitness, and Will Girling, the lead nutritionist for the EF Pro Cycling team, to get their expert advice on this.

Embracing Convenience with Caution

Embracing Convenience with Caution

Electric scooters have swiftly become a common sight on city sidewalks, promising a breezy and efficient mode of transportation. However, the rise in popularity has raised questions about their safety. While electric scooters offer a host of benefits, from reducing traffic congestion to lowering carbon emissions, understanding their potential risks is paramount.

The Basics

The Basics

Before you embark on your electric scooter adventure, it’s crucial to acquaint yourself with the basics. Electric scooters are powered by lithium-ion batteries, propelling you forward with minimal effort. They’re designed for short trips, making them ideal for urban commutes and last-mile connections. But don’t let their simplicity fool you—these scooters can reach speeds of up to 15-20 mph, demanding your attention and caution.

Just like any mode of transportation, electric scooters demand responsible riding. Maneuvering through busy city streets requires heightened awareness and adherence to traffic rules. Always use designated bike lanes or stay on the right side of the road. Avoid sidewalks to prevent collisions with pedestrians, and keep a safe distance from other vehicles.

Don’t let the ease of electric scooters fool you into neglecting safety gear. Protecting yourself with the right equipment can be the difference between a smooth ride and a painful mishap. A well-fitted helmet is non-negotiable. Elbow and knee pads can provide extra protection, especially if you’re new to scooting. Reflective clothing and accessories enhance your visibility, making you more noticeable to other road users, especially during low-light conditions.

Speed Limits and Control

Electric scooters can accelerate quickly, giving you a thrilling sensation of speed. However, maintaining control is paramount. Start with lower speed settings if you’re new to scooting, gradually working your way up as you gain confidence. Be cautious when navigating curves or uneven surfaces, as sudden braking at high speeds can lead to loss of control.

Electric scooters are designed for sharing, and being a courteous rider ensures a harmonious coexistence with pedestrians and fellow riders. Park your scooter in designated areas, preventing blockages on sidewalks. Avoid leaving scooters in the middle of walkways, entrances, or roadways. Respect traffic signals and pedestrians’ right of way to maintain a safe environment for all.
